THE i:SY COMMUNITY MEETING 2024
‘We love i:SY, we live i:SY -
i:SY is not just a bike,
i:SY is a way of life!’
Rita from the i:SY Flagship-Store by VELOREP
Platzhalter
On Sunday, 9 June 2014, the 5th i:SY meeting took place in Wörth am Rhein. Organised by the i:SY flagship store by VELOREP in Karlsruhe and the i:SY experts from Velocenter Hessert, almost 300 i:SY lovers came together for a ride.
Lined up like a string of pearls, numerous i:SY models and colours threaded their way along the Rhine cycle path near Wörth am Rhein. This year, however, it was not just a joint ride, but also the great ambition to break the world record - namely for the longest static bike line of a single brand.
Due to the tense weather conditions in southern Germany, the whole endeavour was in danger of failing. But at the last minute, the OK was given and the planned route was cleared. And the icing on the cake: Martin Kuhlmeier spontaneously joined the longest cycle queue.
Record judge Laura Kuchenbecker from the Record Institute Germany confirmed the world record! She counted no less than 283 i:SY models! The i:SY fan community cheered and let out a long wave of la-ola.
The colourful queue of bikes stretched as far as the eye could see. A joy to behold - everyone was impressed. Martin Kuhlmeier also summed it up at the final get-together: ‘Not only a world record, but also a world-class day! Thank you!’
Jessica Schumacher sums it up after the world record was announced: ‘Our thanks go to our loyal i:SY community, without whom the world record would not have been possible.’
i:SY across the Alps
MARKUS HILGERT
TV maker - from camera to editing to production. He is a passionate cyclist, i:SY fan and is thrilled that i:SY is one of the first manufacturers to install the PINION MGU. Every two-wheeler enthusiast's calves tingle at the mention of crossing the Alps. Markus wants to take on this challenge with our i:SY P12 ZR. He captured his experiences for us in words and pictures.
FIVE DAYS ADVENTURE - WITH THE i:SY P12 ZR FROM FUSSEN TO LAKE GARDENA
Crossing the Alps on a compact bike! Is that possible? You usually see compact bikes on campsites or on the way to the bakery. But why does i:SY use the Pinion MGU, i.e. a motor that is also suitable for high mountain terrain? ‘Does the i:SY P12 perhaps have what it takes for bigger adventures after all?’ I ask myself. I have to test it out! And the idea of crossing the Alps on a compact bike is born. KNOWLEDGE ISLAND: The new i:SY P12 features the revolutionary Pinion MGU, which offers completely new possibilities with a gear range of 600% - i.e. the range between the highest and lowest gear. This was previously unheard of with belt drives.
DAY 1: FÜSSEN - FERNSTEINSEE
I start in Füssen, the highest town in Bavaria, at 800 metres above sea level. From here, the Via Claudia Augusta, an old Roman road, will take me 400 kilometres to Lake Garda. After the first 30 kilometres, I reach the first highlight of my tour. A breathtaking panorama spreads out before me. In front of me is the Hochjoch, behind me rises the imposing Thaneller - I am impressed and think happily: ‘This is exactly why I'm here.’ So far, the tour for the i:SY P12 with the Pinion MGU has been a pleasant ride and the upright riding position allows me to enjoy the landscape even more. MY FIRST SINGLETRAIL ... i:SY - you can do it! Suddenly the track ends and a narrow path winds steeply downwards in front of me. Roots and stones protrude from the ground. This is where the i:SY P12 has to show what it can do. Unfortunately, a compact bike loaded with 25 kilograms of luggage, spread across the rack, front loader and lowrider, is not necessarily off-road friendly.
DAY 2: FERNSTEINSEE - RESCHENSEE
The second day starts with a coffee, taking down the tent and off we go. I have 800 metres of altitude ahead of me. However, the bike's manoeuvrability surprises me in a positive way, and bit by bit I fight my way over the obstacles. The sun is blazing ... Before the tour, I was a little worried: without a suspension fork and suspension seat post in the mountains - would that work? But my first interim conclusion on the second day: the six centimetre wide tyres cushion surprisingly well. So far I don't miss the suspension fork. For those who still don't want to do without a suspension fork, i:SY offers the Adventure model. But as long as there is no singletrack on the agenda, the bike rides excellently even without suspension. However, something else is more important than suspension in the Alps: sun cream! The blazing sun is merciless, my display shows 43 degrees. Although I apply sun cream twice, I get sunburnt.
DAY 3: LAKE RESIA - MERANO
Another highlight along the Via Claudia Augusta is Lake Reschen. This reservoir was flooded around 1950 to serve as a basin for a storage power station. A total of 677 hectares of land and two villages were flooded and almost 150 families lost their livelihoods. The old church tower still rises out of the water today and is also known as the ‘Atlantis of the mountains’. Today, the church tower is a landmark of the region. Legend has it that you can hear the bell of the tower ringing on cold winter nights, even though it was removed decades ago.
A brake test is also on the programme today. When it comes to braking, the i:SY P12 relies on hydraulic disc brakes from Magura, which are optimised for use on e-bikes. But how quickly does the bike actually stop with 25 kilos of luggage and a rider weighing 90 kilograms? I start off at 25 km/h and measure the braking distance, which I can reduce from five metres eighty to three metres fifty within three attempts. My realisation: ‘If I don't stop the bike in time, it's certainly not due to these brakes, which are state of the art, but rather to my ability.’
DAY 4: MERANO - LAIFS
On the fourth day, I cycle through endless apple orchards. Apples of all kinds are grown here on an area the size of over 25,000 football pitches. Around eight per cent of the entire European apple harvest comes from South Tyrol.
The flatter stretches offer a welcome respite after the steep climbs of the last few days. This is also reflected in the battery power: I take stock at the campsite in the evening. After 78 kilometres, I still have 68% battery power left. That's because I made sure to select the support levels as economically as possible today - and it paid off.
Good night!
I'm surprised how much battery I've saved just by only switching on the motor when I really needed to. This shows that there is no clear answer to the question: ‘How far can I get on one battery charge?’ - it always depends. But it's definitely worth driving as economically as possible.
DAY 5: LAIFS - RIVA DEL GARDA
The last day of my journey begins with a detour to Trento. A real Italian coffee at the baroque Neptune Fountain on the cathedral square is just the thing to recharge your batteries. Trento is not only worth a stopover for the delicious coffee, but also for its picturesque alleyways, the Italian way of life and the historic old town centre, which transports you back in time. After this cultural highlight, it's time for the last few metres. Then, behind a hilltop, Lake Garda suddenly appears in all its splendour.
The i:SY P12 was a reliable companion on the entire tour and thus answers the question itself: Crossing the Alps on a compact bike - it's possible with the i:SY P12!
ERIKA RISCHKO - MY i:SY & I
YOU'RE NEVER TOO OLD TO RIDE THE i:SY!
She's a real fitness junkie, says Erika Rischko.
Eight minutes of forearm support? Wall sitting, kettlebell swings, 50-kilo lifts?
No problem at all!
The ‘fitness granny’ is a role model and encourager, her positive energy is simply infectious.
Erika Rischko, the so-called ‘Granfluencer’, who is causing a furore on social media with her fitness and dance videos, is an enthusiastic i:SY rider. She has already managed to infect her husband and daughter with her enthusiasm. We visited her and talked to her about her experiences with the i:SY.
I'm really impressed by the compact design - I'm not particularly tall and the i:SY is easy to handle. Thanks to the comfortable seating position, I immediately feel safe when I get on the i:SY.
With this feeling of security, I prefer to cycle much more often than on a 28’ bike. I am also impressed by the wide choice of colours. I chose the i:SY E5 ZR RT in mint green, but there are so many other great colours - it wasn't easy for me to decide.
What I find particularly practical is the high-quality accessories.
The bags in the fresh colours and the practical click fastener are particularly easy to attach and simply look great.
When I take the i:SY to the gym, I can simply strap my sports gear onto the carrier and off I go. I also like to take my i:SY to the shops or for small errands. It's simply practical and I can do everything in no time at all. If I have more time, I like to go for a longer ride.
Especially in autumn, when everything is so colourful, I like to be out and about.
Thanks to the powerful battery, even the climbs, which are sometimes steeper here in the Bergisches Land, are no problem. And when I go downhill, I am always impressed by how safe I feel on the i:SY.
For me, my i:SY is the ideal companion in all situations, whether it's a short journey or a long ride, I sit safely and comfortably and enjoy cycling.
My husband now also rides an i:SY E5 ZR Adventure with suspension fork. This is even better suited to unpaved forest paths, thanks to the rough tyres and suspension. My daughter Silke is also very impressed.
THE AHLFIS - MY i:SY & I
THE AHLFIS - ALWAYS ON THE MOVE!
Mona and Holger - outdoor enthusiasts, caravan lovers and always up for an adventure. Our i:SY models also feel right at home in this setting and are joined by the two dog ladies Betty and Wilma. Together they are a colourful bunch who enjoy life and simply spread a good mood.
The i:SY Century models in riviera blue and racing green are a must when travelling with the motorhome. The two compact bikes fit in easily and ensure the perfect radius of action once you arrive at your destination.
In combination with the i:SY front carrier with KLICKfix® holder and the Basil Buddy dog basket, the two ladies Betty and Wilma are right at the front of the pack.
The riviera blue radiates a holiday feeling, even if it's a rainy day. Mona can only confirm this. She really appreciates the compactness of the i:SY, as it is easy to handle, especially for smaller people. She is also impressed by the lightness that comes with cycling off. Simply sit on it and the smile is pre-programmed.
The technical features are also impressive.
Holger is very impressed by the range of the Nexus 5-speed hub gears, which allow you to master both tarmac cycle paths and trickier climbs with ease. With the powerful BOSCH Performance Line CX motor with 85 Nm, even an off-road tour is no problem.
Like on their last trip in Croatia, for example, when they travelled over hill and dale to Cape Kamenjak, the southernmost tip of Istria. The wide balloon tyres also proved their worth here. With a large contact surface and comfortable suspension, they provide grip and comfort.
The i:SY models are the ideal travelling companions if you have little space but don't want to miss out on riding fun. The toothed belt drive is also particularly practical: no oily chain to dirty your fingers or motorhome.
Vera Int-Veen - MY i:SY & I
MODERATOR, TV PRODUCER & EXPERIENCED i:SY DRIVER
You could always see it flashing through on her Instagram account - Vera Int-Veen and her wife Obi have been enthusiastic i:SY lovers for many years.
Without making a big fuss about it. If you look at the videos and pictures, you'll be blown away by their beaming smiles while cycling. So we too were intrigued and naturally wanted to know what Vera's experiences with our i:SY have been so far.
What do you love most about your i:SY?
The i:SY has given me a completely new attitude to cycling! Even after years, I always feel great when I set off on my i:SY.
You feel much safer than on normal bikes and have a completely different riding experience. Nobody who hasn't sat on an i:SY can understand that.
In which everyday situations do you use your i:SY or do you only use it in your free time?
I use my i:SY for all trips where a car doesn't make sense. Whether it's to go shopping, to get to appointments or to go into town where there are no parking spaces anyway. Sometimes I just take the train for a few stops and then get back on the saddle - no problem with the i:SY.
What challenging situation have you encountered with the i:SY?
The only challenge with the i:SY is explaining to people who keep asking you about it that it's not a folding bike and what advantages the i:SY has.
What aha moment did you experience with your i:SY?
When I sat on an i:SY for the first time, I realised that I felt much more secure. Your feet are on the ground much faster and the wide wheels give you much more grip, especially on uneven surfaces, gravel and sand.
And the incredibly small turning circle is also really amazing - that's a huge advantage, especially on the track, when you need to turn the bike quickly on the spot.
Who would you recommend the i:SY to?
I would really recommend the i:SY to EVERYONE! It's so much fun to ride on tours!
I think the i:SY is definitely the best choice for smaller people or perhaps older people who no longer feel so confident when cycling!
